Depth, Rhythm and Timber Warmth in One Profile
If the V-Join profile is the clean, contemporary take on horizontal timber cladding, WoodEx® Castellated is what happens when you push the design intent a step further. The castellated, or stepped, cross-section profile creates a more three-dimensional surface than a flat board, projecting further from the wall and casting a stronger, more dramatic shadow line. The result is a facade that has genuine physical depth and visual presence without requiring any additional design complexity in the specification.
Manufactured from 100% solid aluminium using sublimation timber-look coating technology, Castellated Cladding delivers everything the V-Join does: non-combustible, virtually maintenance-free, UV-stable, and marine-grade prefinished but with a bolder surface character that suits projects where the cladding itself is intended to be a feature rather than a background.
About the Castellated Profile
‘Castellated’ refers to a stepped or notched profile. In WoodEx®, this means each board has a cross-section that projects at different depths from the substrate, creating alternating ridges and recesses across the cladding surface. Where the V-join creates shadow lines at board joins, Castellated creates them within each individual board; the stepped face catches and releases light along the full length of every board, producing a continuous, dynamic surface quality.
At 160 mm coverage per board, matching the V-Join profile, Castellated Cladding fits the same residential scale as V-Join while delivering a fundamentally different surface expression. The two profiles can be used together on the same project: V-Join as the primary cladding element and Castellated as an accent band or feature panel, or separated by material zone to create compositional variety.

Stocked
Locally stocked in Australia, through CSP Architectural
Available Timber Finishes
Castellated Cladding is available in the same sublimation timber-look finish range as the full WoodEx® system, each colour replicating the grain and tonal character of a specific Australian timber species.
Physical samples are essential for Castellated Cladding colour selection. The stepped profile creates shadow within the board face that deepens the apparent tone of the finish; a lighter colour will read as more saturated on the installed cladding than it appears on a flat sample in isolation.
Where Castellated Cladding Works Best
Feature facade elements
Where a section of the building elevation is intended to be the design focal point, a front entry, a street-facing gable, or a stair tower, Castellated Cladding delivers the presence and material depth to carry that role.
Contemporary residential facades
On new residential builds where the facade is part of a deliberate architectural statement, the stepped profile adds sophistication without introducing complexity into the construction. The concealed fix system keeps the surface clean.
Commercial and hospitality
Retail frontages, restaurants, hotels and boutique commercial buildings frequently use Castellated Cladding for the warmth of timber with the durability of aluminium, a combination that holds up to years of commercial exposure without the maintenance burden of actual timber.
Garage doors and gates
Castellated Cladding is listed by CSP as an application for garage doors; the stepped profile and aluminium construction are well-suited to vertical door panel applications where real timber is often specified but poorly suited to the cycling and exposure conditions.
Fire Classification Note
WoodEx® Castellated Cladding is non-combustible as per BCA AS1530.1 and AS1530.3. It is suitable for external facades in BAL-rated bushfire zones and on buildings where the NCC requires non-combustible external wall cladding.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a castellated cladding profile, and how does it differ from V-Join?
A castellated profile has a stepped cross-section; the board projects from the wall at alternating depths, creating ridges and recesses within each individual board rather than at board joins. WoodEx® V-Join creates shadow lines at the groove between boards; WoodEx® Castellated creates shadow lines within the face of each board through the stepped geometry. Castellated has a bolder, more three-dimensional surface presence. Both profiles provide 160mm of coverage per board.
What are the dimensions of WoodEx® Castellated Cladding?
WoodEx® Castellated Cladding boards are 5800 mm in length, 200 mm in width and 27 mm in height; the 27 mm represents the stepped profile depth, which is the physical projection of the board face from its deepest point to its highest point. This 27mm depth is what creates the strong shadow lines that distinguish Castellated from flatter cladding profiles.
Can WoodEx® Castellated be combined with V-Join on the same facade?
Yes, and this is a common approach. V-Join can be used across the primary cladding area, with Castellated used as an accent band, feature panel or zone-specific element. Both profiles share the same timber-look finish range, so colour matching across the two systems is straightforward. The profiles use compatible fixing and trim systems, which simplifies installation where they meet.
Is WoodEx® Castellated Cladding suitable for garage doors?
Yes. WoodEx® Castellated Cladding is listed as suitable for garage door panel applications. The aluminium construction handles the operational cycles and exposure conditions of a garage door without the warping, splitting or swelling that timber doors can experience in Australian conditions.
